Amateur Radio
Although it is called“Amateur Radio” in the literature of our country, it is actually the name of the certification provided by the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications. With this internationally recognized document, the frequency ranges called“Public Band” or the bands used by sailors can be used. Although the name is amateur, the people who do this job are professional radio operators about radio-telecommunication.
Radio History
This device, which is translated as“Radio” in English and“Wireless” in our language, started to be used shortly before the start of World War II in line with the needs and requirements at the end of World War I.
In fact, although radio communication dates back to the 1800s, the widespread use of radio systems and devices that allow “two-way” radio communication in the sense we use it today was in the 1940s.
It was used for military purposes during the war and in peacetime it was used in the fields of Defense, Internal Security, Public Order, Health, Transportation and by amateurs. Especially in the 1950s, when there was no Internet yet, it became an idol and appealed to wide circles. In this period, it was used both scientifically and fantastically for two-way communication as well as for listening to frequencies and waves originating from space and atmosphere.

Radio Types: Table Radio – Vehicle Radio – Handheld Radio
Amateur Radio Law
Although“Amateur Radio” in Turkey was banned by Law No. 3222 for many years, the Law No. 2813 enacted in 1983 paved the way for it. Law No. 2813 adopted by the“Amateur Radio Regulation” in accordance with the“Amateur Radio Regulation” you can become an amateur radio operator.
You must first apply to the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications General Directorate of Coastal Safety and obtainan “Amateur Radio License” if you are successful in the exams. Otherwise, your radio use will remain at the level of“Walkie Talkie“(CB or PMR frequencies).
Wireless License Types
The maximum output power of these devices must be 0.5 watts. This means that you can only provide radio communication in 32 different tones on 8 authorized frequencies at short distances. If you have high expectations, you need to apply for a type A, B or C license.
As soon as you get your Amateur Radio License, you can buy radio devices approved by BTK in our country thanks to this document. Although buying from abroad seems to be advantageous in terms of price, you may have a headache if you buy without paying attention to the frequency range and output power information.
After a brief history and legal legislation, let’s start our first article on Amateur Radio by starting from radio types and some technical terms.
Radio Frequencies
Frequency: The Mega Hertz equivalent of the wavelength required for one-way or two-way broadcasting. Radios with the same frequency can communicate with each other.
Roger Beep: It is the signal sound that varies according to the brand and model at the beginning or end of the communication in walkie-talkie radios broadcasting on CB or PMR frequencies. Amateur Radio operators do not use this sound. Instead, they say words like “OKEY” or “Understood”.
Tone (R-CTC/T-CTC): A security measure called Tone has been developed to prevent interference between different communications on the same frequency. Thus, in order to catch only your own group’s conversations while talking/listening, the same Tone value must be entered for that frequency value in all radios in your group. Two different Tone values can be entered when you press the latch or in the listening position. For example R-CTC:67.0 and T-CTC:127.3
ANI-ID: are the identification numbers of the radios. If requested, it is transmitted to all stations at the end of the communication with a signal sound such as Roger Beep. In this way, it can be recorded who is communicating.

Relay Station: The radios can only be used with output power.
PMR Radio Frequencies and Tone Values
Actually, when we talk about CB and PMR frequencies, it is useful to go into some detail. The frequencies we call PMR frequencies are 8 in total and there are 38 tones.
