We will talk about“ how to resetthe forgotten Admin password” on Enterasys 800-Series network switches. In this article, only Enterasys password recovery, that is, password reset instructions will be explained in 800-series switches.

First of all, you will need to connect to the switch with the console interface. You cannot perform these operations from SSH, Telnet, Web interface. Connect to the device from the console port with a console software(Putty, hyper terminal, Secure CRT). You will not be able to write commands because you forgot the password. Therefore, follow the steps below in order.

How to Perform Enterasys Password Recovery?

1. Unplug the power cable from the device you are connecting to from the Console and plug it back in after a few seconds.

2. When the device boots up, you will see an image like the one below on the Consol screen.

3. When“Starting runtime image” appears on the screen, press the * (asterisk) character several times in a row. Although the user manual of the device says SHIFT+8, this is valid for English keyboard and operating system. Therefore, if you are using a Turkish keyboard and operating system, press the Yildiz key on the keypad above the letters on the keyboard.

4. After this step, the switch will enter the command line in intermediate mode without going to“Discover Devices” mode. Type the following command on this line and then enter the reboot command to restart the device.

reset password admin
reboot

After the switch restarts, the password of the Admin user is reset to the factory settings, that is, the password is empty. During this process, the switch configuration is not changed. Only Password Recovery is performed.
