In this article called Hp Procurve switch commands, I will talk about how to make some controls and settings on Procurve E-series smart (manageable) switches.

While explaining our settings, we will take the HP Procurve 2650 and 2510 model as a basis. However, since there will be no obvious difference in HP’s other Procurve switch models, you can easily adapt it to other models.

Management Console Connection

First of all, you should decide what kind of connection you will make with the switch. For example, if there is no configuration on it or if there are configurations that you do not know, you will have to connect from the console. You can provide the connection between the Switch and the PC via the COM port on your computer. There is 1 rs232 connection cable supplied with the switch, it is available in the box, if you do not have it, it will not be difficult to obtain it.

If you search for RS232 connection cable, you will definitely find it. Only in some Procurve models, the console connection is on the front of the switch and it is an RJ45 type port. You will need a different cable to make the console connection from here. One end of this cable is RJ45 and the other end is RS232.

If you have provided the connection between the Switch and the PC with this connection cable, the only thing left is which program you will manage the switch with. That is, with which program you will connect to the console interface of the switch. Although you have several different options, the most commonly used“putty, telnet or hyper terminal” programs are the most useful ones.

We will make our console connection with the Putty program. However, I should mention that while the Hyper Terminal program comes pre-installed in Windows XP, you need to install it manually in Windows 7 and higher operating systems.

Since notebook computers produced in recent years do not have a com port, we can convert it to usb interface with a converter and establish our connection in this way. RS232 to USB converter is required for this. If your computer has a com port you will not need this converter anyway.

We said that you can access the CLI interface of your Hp Procurve smart switch with HyperTerminal, Putty, SecureCRT type console interfaces, now let’s write the standard switch connection parameters you need to do after physically providing this connection. These parameters are the same for most of the console software and switch CLI interfaces.

After entering the command line, you can use the“menu” command to go to the menu page with all the information and settings, or if you are an advanced user, you can run the commands one by one from this line. You can also type“help” or “?” to see the switch commands.
